Postclassic Maya Commoner

Description

Here's the first in the male lineup of outfits I'm going to be illustrating. He is Maya of the Yucatan during the Postclassic period.

For this figure I used the Codex Madrid. The pose is borrowed from the Jaina figurines ( even though these date to the late classic period I only used the pose as inspiration since it has so much character). He holds a flask for alcohol. His facial expression denotes he is probably a little drunk too.

He wears a loincloth. The most basic male garment, equivalent to a woman's skirt. The clothing was tied to gender so much that loincloths were even considered a 'phallus' (not a penis) in symbolic terms. It was a highly masculine garment as a skirt was a highly feminine garment. When it came to deities, rituals and religion in general however, this gender distinction was so blurred and confusing it would be impossible to fully understand from a modern western perspective. This loincloth is simple, but has some designs on the ends and middle. Maya women took great care in weaving the ends of the lonincloth for their husbands and male family members.
